Scuba diving does not have a maximum weight limit. However, it is a sport and most sports requires a certain level of fitness to participate. Obesity, however, can pose danger as it often goes hand in hand with heart problems, high blood pressure and diabetes, all of which require a doctors approval to dive.

How much weight do you need for scuba diving?

A simple buoyancy check consists of: Initial weight: If youre not sure where to begin, figure about 10% of your body weight. If you are diving in tropical waters with a thin wetsuit, subtract 4-6 pounds, and if you are diving in cold water with a lot of exposure protection, add 4-6 pounds.

Can you scuba dive if you are underweight?

There is very little information available when it comes to underweight divers. In these cases, the person is not to be considered overweight and can dive safely provided there are no other health concerns. People who have a high BMI, but low body fat and are healthy are also perfectly fine to dive.

Can overweight people freedive?

Body fat burns O2, and obese people have oxygen consumption rates that are dramatically higher than skinny people. So, in general, excess fat will be detrimental to freediving performance.

How hot can an oxygen tank get before it explodes?

Oxygen cylinders should not be stored in an area where the temperature goes above 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Never store oxygen cylinders in a car trunk or a hot vehicle. Always “crack” the oxygen cylinder valves before attaching regulators in order to get rid of dirt and debris from the outlet port of the valve.

Why are freedivers skinny?

Freediving is no exception. Like many have experienced, freediving can make you skinny quite fast. Going through high levels of hypoxia while diving to extreme depths burns a lot of calories. All freedivers know that while freediving one second can make the difference between consciousness and blackout.

Do you have to be fit to free dive?

There are really only a handful of things that you need to go freediving, and one of them is a good underwater mask. Aside from looking for a good fit, choose one with a low volume or low profile so it sits closer to your face, can be cleared of water more quickly, and reduces in-water drag.
