Question: Why does Easter move each year?

Easter is always on the first Sunday after the first full moon that follows the spring equinox. So there you go – this year, the first full moon after the 21 March is Sunday 28 March, hence why Easter is on Sunday 4 April.

Why does Easter move every year?

This means its date on the Gregorian calendar can vary every year. By taking into account the date of the vernal equinox (which this year fell on Saturday 20 March) and the next following full moon (Sunday 28 March), it was therefore calculated that Easter Sunday would take place on Sunday 4 April in 2021.

Why is Easter movable?

Easter is a moveable feast celebrated on the first Sunday after the vernal equinox full moon (i.e. on Sunday after the full moon of March). These dates are calculated with the old Gregorian calendar, because it specifies the vernal equinox.

Why is Good Friday a different date each year?

According to the Bible, Jesus Christs death and resurrection occurred at the time of the Jewish Passover, which was celebrated on the first Full Moon following the vernal equinox. This soon led to Christians celebrating Easter on different dates.

Who is the God of Easter?

Easter was originally the celebration of Ishtar, the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility and sex. Her symbols (like the egg and bunny) were and still are fertility and sex symbols (or did you actually think eggs and bunnies had anything to do with the resurrection?)
