Why were the Royal Marines created?

The original marines, or sea soldiers, were formed in 1664 to sail in the ships of the Royal Navy. In 1704, marines repelled the Spanish as Britain attacked Gibraltar. Marines were among the first ships to arrive in Australia in 1788.
