Question: What does product dating mean?

“Open Dating” on a food product is a date stamped on a products package to help the store determine how long to display the product for sale. It can also help the purchaser to know the time limit to purchase or use the product at its best quality. It is not a safety date.

Why is it important to put or include the correct product dating?

In an effort to reduce food waste, it is important that consumers understand that the dates applied to food are for quality and not for safety. Food products are safe to consume past the date on the label, and regardless of the date, consumers should evaluate the quality of the food product prior to its consumption.

Does BB mean best before?

Best before dates are only required on products with a shelf life of less than 90 days, although they are frequently found on products with long shelf lives (like canned goods). Best Before dates are marked with the words “Best Before” or “B.B./M.A.”
